"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near." Philippians 4:4-5

The Apostle Paul had been thrown into a Roman prison for his preaching of the gospel. In these dark and dire conditions, inspired by the Holy Spirit, he wrote his letter to the Phillipians. To say his circumstances were in conflict with the joyful thrust of this book is an understatement. How could he pen those words and admonish the church to rejoice when he himself was enduring such hardship?

I believe his intimacy with his joy-filled Father was the grace that kept him in a positive, upbeat state when everything around him looked the opposite. He knew this great and merciful One who loved him unconditionally unrelated to his own performance. He knew this gentle long suffering One who would never leave him or forsake him. And he knew this joy-filled One who was so completely satisfied in His own Son's work on the cross that He had nothing left but the cheerful giving of love and good gifts to His children. Paul was enraptured by this love and his life reflected an unquenchable passion for others to come to know and put their faith in his incomparable Savior.
